In a decisive move, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has taken disciplinary action by suspending two students for violating university regulations.
The suspension, conveyed through separate letters dated February 21, 2024, and signed by the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, details the cases of the affected students. Otu Ime Monday, enrolled in the Department of Library Science within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Education, has been suspended from studies for the 2023/2024 session. The suspension was imposed by the Vice Chancellor for contravening the university’s directive against holding the position of “Class Representative.”
According to the suspension letter, Otu Ime Monday allegedly sent text messages on WhatsApp inviting fellow students to a drinking joint in town, under the guise of an “induction into Class Rep Forum of National Association of Library Science Students(NALISS) department.” The meeting’s venue was scheduled for Eta-Agbor Layout Overhead Tank at 4 pm on February 8, 2024, with invitees instructed to bring a bottle of Gordon Dry gin, a bottle of groundnut, and a two-thousand-naira foundation levy.
In response, the Vice Chancellor and the University’s Constituted Authorities approved the suspension of Otu Ime Monday from studies.
Similarly, Prosper Ndubueze of the Faculty of Pharmacy faced suspension for assaulting Faith Chinedu, a female student, resulting in bodily harm. The suspension, outlined in the letter, emphasizes that such acts of lawlessness go against the Students’ code of conduct as specified in the Students’ Handbook. Prosper Ndubueze’s suspension is effective from the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Education, the Head of the Department of Library Science, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the acting Chief Security Officer have been tasked with ensuring full compliance with this directive.
Furthermore, the suspended students are instructed to stay away from campus unless summoned by the Students Disciplinary Committee, which has been authorized to conduct an investigation into the matter.
