A tragic incident has unfolded at Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja, claiming the lives of two students, Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo (20) and Ibrahim Haliru. The cause of their untimely demise was attributed to the inhalation of generator fumes.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the unfortunate incident in a telephone interview with DAILY POST on Thursday evening. According to Aya, the lifeless bodies of the students were discovered in their room, where a generator had been placed near a window. The proximity of the generator to the living space resulted in the tragic consequences of carbon monoxide poisoning.
In addition to the fatalities, another student, Mercy Ojochegbe, who was present in the room, was rushed to the hospital after being found still breathing. Investigations into the incident have been initiated following a report filed at the B division of the Nigeria Police Force in Lokoja.
SP William Ovye Aya urged residents to prioritize safety measures when using generator sets, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe distance and avoiding placement near living quarters. He highlighted the critical need for awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning and urged the public to remain vigilant to prevent such tragedies.
Aya reiterated that safety should take precedence over concerns about potential theft, underscoring the paramount importance of preserving human life above material possessions. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with improper generator use and the imperative of fostering a culture of safety in communities.
