The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has announced that 41 final-year students are set to receive First Class degrees during its 28th Convocation scheduled for Saturday, February 17, 2024. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, shared this information during a pre-convocation press briefing held in Abuja. Out of a total of 7,896 students participating in the convocation, 151 will be receiving PhDs, and 742 will be graduating with Masters and professional Masters degrees.
Prof. Na’Allah provided a breakdown of the graduating students, revealing that 1,845 students will attain Second Class upper, 4,842 Second Class lower, 1,075 Third Class, and 50 with passes. Furthermore, 971 students are set to graduate from the Centre for Distance Learning, while 383 will receive Post-Graduate Diplomas.
Highlighting the university’s commitment to producing self-reliant graduates, Prof. Na’Allah mentioned a unique graduation requirement. Students are now required to register a company with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Additionally, the university is launching the University Foundation, an independent entity with external individuals overseeing it. This foundation will allocate funds annually to support infrastructure or research projects within the university, strengthening its future prospects.
The Vice-Chancellor also shared developments within the university, including the establishment of four new faculties: Nursing, Pharmacy, Communication and Media Studies, and Environment of Natural Sciences. These faculties commenced academic studies in the 2023/2024 academic year. In addressing prevalent issues, the institution is launching a formal system against sexual harassment involving students and staff.
Moreover, UniAbuja is collaborating with family home funds to secure support for building staff quarters within the campus. Prof. Na’Allah expressed optimism that these ongoing projects will contribute to the sustained growth and development of the university in the future.
